Oklahoman History pt. 1

Oklahoman history has its place in the hearts of Okies. We hear stories brought down by our ancestors of different times. Times of wonder and excitement. In this series of posts I want to tell you our history, because it needs to be told.

Pt. 1 Prehistoric Times.

Oklahoma has it roots very far back. Two main Indian tribes lived here which we have given the name "cave dwellers" and "mound builders". Each tribe had their own distinct traditions and customs

The "Mound Builders" get their name from the circular mounds that they created. Many of their mounds have been excavated, revealing that they were burial grounds. Each mound was addorned with gold and jewels. Many mounds still exsist to this day in eastern Oklahoma. The Spiro Mounds is one of the biggest finds and sits right next to the city of Spiro.

The "Cave Dwellers" we a semi-nomadic culture that lived in caves in northeastern Oklahoma. They had little kitchens and tools. Life was fairly easy for them. The caves they used were usually shelves of rock.

There is actual evidence that europeans visited Oklahoma. Vikings visited in long boats in around 1000 AD. They left their mark in rocks which are called rune stones. Rune stones are thought to be maps or prayer to gods. Currently three known rune stones are in Oklahoma. For more information visit this website on North American Rune Stones.
